The human body is composed of three basic parts; spirit, soul, flesh. Each and every one of us has a spirit, but not everyone’s spirit is awake. We are spiritually dead until our spirits are revived (Revelation 3:1). “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead” (James 2:26, ESV).
In the book “God’s Mystery That Is Christ” the spirit is defined as the animating or vital principle that gives life to the inner man. The soul is defined as the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual’s outer man. Further, the soul encompasses our desires, emotions and instinct. It is the part of the outer man that does not die once salvation and redemption are attained. That said, the spirit and soul are not interchangeable. Although their definitions appear similar, they refer to two very different things. The spirit is part of our inner body, whereas the soul and flesh are parts of the outer body. The law contained in the Bible’s written word influences our flesh, and the enlightened Word influences our spirits
It is possible to be knowledgeable about God and dutiful to Him, while not able to comprehend the inner Word with the Spirit of Truth. When this occurs, there is a great chasm blocking the inner body that prevents our spirits from joining completely with our outer body. “And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us” (Luke 16:26, ESV). When our spirit is asleep, it is far away from our flesh although it is a part of us.
The resurrection is at the core of the Christian faith. Christ’s actions on earth were performed to set an example for us, that we may follow in His footsteps (John 13:15). Just as Christ Jesus was resurrected on the third day, we too must follow His example and be resurrected on the third. I refer to this as reaching for and attain the third day faith. “After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will restore us, that we may live in His presence” (Hosea 6:2, NIV). It is necessary to revive our spirit with Christ’s Truth. This is how we follow Christ’s resurrection example.
The mind-set of the flesh is our soul or outer man’s thoughts. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (Romans 8:6, NLT). Conversely, the mind-set of the spirit is our inner man’s thoughts. This is what the apostle Paul is articulating in Romans 7:22–23 when he declares “For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.”
Often times, when land or earth is referred to in the Bible, it is analogous to our body. Deuteronomy 19:3 says, “Build roads to them and divide into three parts the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that anyone who kills a man may flee there” (NIV). In other words, build roads to the three parts of the body: the spirit, soul, and flesh. This is the land that the Lord our God gives us as an inheritance—spirit, soul, and flesh that are joined in unity. In order to enter our country of origin (Hebrews 11:13–16), where our revived spirit dwells with Christ Jesus, we must see the Word of Truth that is hidden in the Bible’s written word. Only the Word of Christ’s Truth can connect the three divided parts. These references and more are fully explained in “God’s Mystery That Is Christ”
At the height of Jesus’ ministry a disciple wanted to bury his father before following Jesus. “And Jesus said to him, ‘Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead’” (Matthew 8:22, ESV). We must revive our spirit to be considered living before God. “He is not God of the dead, but of the living” (Matthew 22:32, ESV).
If storm clouds loom, rain will surely come. If the Bible’s words are written in our hearts, the Spirit of Truth will surely come to us so we can comprehend His Word. “When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the Truth” (John 16:13, NASB). The great chasm between the spirit and outer body cannot be bridged without discerning Christ’s Truth, the inner Word. The discerned Word is the Word of Christ’s Truth. It is God’s mystery hidden in the Bible’s written word. Understanding God’s Truth is essential to reviving our spirit and obtaining eternal life.
